I check the sky before I check my phone now. Ten seconds looking up tells you more about whether your tee time survives than any radar app, once you know what you're looking at. This is the version I wish someone had handed me years ago instead of me squinting at gray sky wondering if I should cancel.

01 · Altitude

Start with how high it is

Forget shape for a second. The first question is which layer you're looking at, because that alone rules out most of the guesswork.

Low

Thick, close, often gray. This is where stratus, stratocumulus, and the rain-makers live.

Mid

Usually prefixed "alto." Smaller, more textured, less dramatic on their own.

High

Thin and wispy, made of ice crystals. Nice to look at, rarely the reason your round gets called.

02 · The full lineup

All ten cloud types, sorted by family

These are every genus that shows up in a standard sky. Most days you're only dealing with two or three of them at once.

Cirrus
High
Fair weather
Look for: thin, wispy streaks, almost like brush strokes. Usually just means fair weather, though a thickening batch can be an early signal that a system is a day or two out.
Cirrocumulus
High
Rare, tidy
Look for: small, rippled patches in rows, the "mackerel sky" look. Doesn't last long and doesn't usually mean much on its own.
Cirrostratus
High
Halo maker
Look for: a thin, milky sheet covering the whole sky. If you see a ring around the sun or moon, this is why. Often shows up 12 to 24 hours before rain.
Altocumulus
Mid
Puffy patches
Look for: gray or white clumps in a wavy pattern, bigger than cirrocumulus. Showing up on a warm humid morning can hint at storms later in the day.
Altostratus
Mid
Dull gray sheet
Look for: a flat gray or blue-gray layer that dims the sun without blocking it fully. Often the setup act right before steadier rain moves in.
Nimbostratus
Low to mid
Steady rain
Look for: a thick, featureless dark gray blanket. No texture, no edges, just flat. This is the one delivering the all-day soaking rain, not a quick pop-up shower.
Stratocumulus
Low
Lumpy gray
Look for: a low, lumpy gray layer, patchy rather than solid. Common and mostly harmless, occasionally drizzle but rarely a real storm.
Stratus

Fog with altitude
Look for: a flat, uniform gray ceiling, basically fog that didn't touch the ground. Can produce light mist or drizzle, not much more.
Cumulus
Low
The classic puffy one
Look for: flat bottom, rounded cotton-ball top. Small and scattered means good weather. Watch what it's doing next, because this one can build into something else fast.
Cumulonimbus
Low base, towers through all layers
Get off the course
Look for: a dark, towering cloud with a hard, flat, anvil-shaped top. This is the thunderstorm cloud, the only one that reliably brings lightning. If it's growing fast and getting taller, that's your cue to leave.

You don't need to memorize ten Latin names mid-round. Run through this order and you'll land on the right family almost every time.

04 · Common mistakes

Where people get it wrong

Most misreads come from stopping at "gray sky" instead of actually looking at the shape.

Calling every gray sky a "storm"
Stratus and stratocumulus are gray and usually harmless. Cumulonimbus is the one you actually need to worry about.

Assuming any puffy cloud means rain
Small, scattered cumulus on a nice day is normal fair weather. It only matters once it starts stacking vertically.

Ignoring a thickening cirrus layer
It looks harmless because it's thin, but cirrus turning into cirrostratus is often the first real sign a system is a day out.

Mixing up contrails and cirrus
A straight line behind a plane isn't a weather signal. Natural cirrus is irregular and drifts with the wind.

Staying out once a cumulonimbus starts building
By the time you hear thunder, lightning is already close enough to be dangerous. The anvil top and rapid vertical growth are your earlier warning.
