Cloud Identification at a Glance
I check the sky before I check my phone now. Ten seconds looking up tells you more about whether your tee time survives than any radar app, once you know what you're looking at. This is the version I wish someone had handed me years ago instead of me squinting at gray sky wondering if I should cancel.
Start with how high it is
Forget shape for a second. The first question is which layer you're looking at, because that alone rules out most of the guesswork.
Thick, close, often gray. This is where stratus, stratocumulus, and the rain-makers live.
Usually prefixed "alto." Smaller, more textured, less dramatic on their own.
Thin and wispy, made of ice crystals. Nice to look at, rarely the reason your round gets called.

These are every genus that shows up in a standard sky. Most days you're only dealing with two or three of them at once.

The ten-second method
You don't need to memorize ten Latin names mid-round. Run through this order and you'll land on the right family almost every time.
Where people get it wrong
Most misreads come from stopping at "gray sky" instead of actually looking at the shape.
Stratus and stratocumulus are gray and usually harmless. Cumulonimbus is the one you actually need to worry about.
Small, scattered cumulus on a nice day is normal fair weather. It only matters once it starts stacking vertically.
It looks harmless because it's thin, but cirrus turning into cirrostratus is often the first real sign a system is a day out.
A straight line behind a plane isn't a weather signal. Natural cirrus is irregular and drifts with the wind.
By the time you hear thunder, lightning is already close enough to be dangerous. The anvil top and rapid vertical growth are your earlier warning.
