Ran my hand across the front tires on the Odyssey a few months back and one side felt like a washboard, sharp on one edge, smooth on the other. That's feathering, and it almost always means a toe alignment problem, not a bad tire. Ninety bucks at the alignment shop instead of six hundred on tires I didn't actually need yet. Once you know what each pattern is telling you, the tread is basically diagnosing the car for you before anything actually breaks.

01 · Diagnosis

The six patterns that show up most

Every wear pattern points at a specific mechanical cause. Tap through these and go look at your actual tires while you read, it's way easier to spot once you know what you're looking for.

Center wear
Bald strip down the middle, shoulders still deep
Overinflation
What's happening: too much air bows the tread outward so only the center contacts the road. Check your door-jamb sticker for the actual PSI spec and stop guessing off the number molded on the tire sidewall, that's the max, not the target.
Edge wear, both sides
Both outer edges worn, center still has tread
Underinflation
What's happening: the opposite problem. Low pressure lets the tire sag so the outer edges carry the load. Also drags down fuel economy and adds heat, which is its own failure mode on long highway runs.
One-side edge wear
Inner or outer edge going faster than the rest of the tire
Camber misalignment
What's happening: the wheel is tilted in or out from vertical, so one edge is doing all the work. Pressure isn't the fix here, an alignment is. Worth checking after any hard curb hit or pothole strike too.
Cupping / scalloping
Wavy dips around the tire, rougher ride, noticeable hum
Worn shocks or struts
What's happening: the tire is bouncing instead of staying planted, usually because the suspension isn't damping it anymore. Rotate the tires and the cupping just moves to a new tire if you don't fix the suspension component causing it.
Feathering
Tread ribs sharp on one edge, smooth on the other, feel it with your hand
Toe misalignment
What's happening: the wheels are pointed slightly in or out relative to each other instead of straight ahead, so each tread block scrubs sideways with every rotation. This is the one that's easy to miss looking at the tire but obvious the second you run a hand across it.
Patchy or flat-spot wear
Random bald patches, or one distinct flat section
Imbalance or hard braking
What's happening: an out-of-balance wheel wears unevenly as it hops slightly with every rotation. A single flat spot is more often locked-up braking or a car that sat too long on the same spot. Rebalancing fixes the first, not the second.
02 · Tread depth

How much tread you actually have left

2/32" is the legal minimum in most states, that's regulated, not a suggestion. Everything above it is a practical range: the closer you get to that line, the worse your wet braking distance gets, well before the tire is technically illegal.

New

Most passenger tires ship with 10/32" to 11/32" of tread. That's your baseline for tracking wear rate over time.

Plenty of life

Normal daily driving range. Rotate every 5,000-7,500 miles here to keep wear even across all four.

Watch it

Wet traction and stopping distance start dropping noticeably. Fine for dry summer driving, not where you want to be heading into wet or winter roads.

Replace now

2/32" is the legal minimum tread depth in nearly every US state, and it's regulated for a reason: below that, water can't channel out from under the tire and you lose grip fast.

03 · Fixing it

Check things in this order

Cheapest, most common cause first. No point paying for an alignment if the real problem is a tire that's been sitting at 26 PSI for three months.

Check and correct pressure
Cold, all four tires, matched to the door-jamb sticker. Fixes center and edge wear if that's the actual cause.

Inspect alignment and suspension
One-side edge wear and feathering point to alignment. Cupping points to shocks or struts. Both need a shop's help to confirm.

Rotate and rebalance on schedule
Every 5,000-7,500 miles, or every other oil change. Catches uneven wear early instead of after it's already a pattern.
04 · Common mistakes

Where people get this wrong

Most of these come down to treating tread wear as random instead of what it is: a symptom with a specific cause.

Only checking pressure when the dash light comes on
TPMS usually doesn't warn until you're already 25% low, well past where uneven wear has started.

Writing off cupping noise as "just road noise"
That hum is the suspension telling you something is worn. It doesn't go away, it gets louder.

Skipping rotations because nothing looks wrong yet
Uneven wear starts before it's visible. Rotation is what keeps it even in the first place.

Assuming feathering means the tires are bad
Buying a new set without fixing the toe alignment just feathers the new set too, on the same timeline.

Only checking tread depth by looking at the wear bars
Wear bars trigger right around the 2/32" legal minimum. A quarter or a tread depth gauge tells you where you actually stand before that point.

Not checking alignment after a hard pothole or curb hit
Impacts can knock camber or toe out immediately even when the car still drives straight.
