Regular is fine
The majority of engines on the road, my Odyssey included, are tuned for regular and get zero benefit from paying more. Higher octane doesn't add power or clean the engine any better on an engine that wasn't built to use it.
My Odyssey drinks 87 and has never once complained about it. The Charger, once I get it back together, is going to want something a lot more expensive, and that's fine because Chrysler built that engine around a higher compression ratio on purpose. What's not fine is standing at the pump guessing, because that guess either wastes money every single fill-up or slowly beats up an engine that needed the good stuff. I went and figured out what the octane number is actually doing, and it's simpler than the marketing makes it sound.
Octane isn't a measure of power or cleanliness. It's a measure of how resistant the fuel is to igniting under pressure before the spark plug fires, which is what causes engine knock. Higher compression and turbocharged engines create more pressure in the cylinder, so they need fuel that resists igniting early.
Built for standard compression engines. This is what the overwhelming majority of cars on the road, including my minivan, are designed to run on every day.
A blend most stations mix on the fly between the regular and premium tanks. Some manufacturers spec it for a handful of models, but it's the least common grade at the pump.
Needed for high-compression and turbocharged engines that would otherwise knock under load. The exact number depends on your region: 93 is common in the east and midwest, 91 is common out west and at altitude, where thinner air already lowers effective compression.
